On the Wednesday, January 22 episode of The Young and the Restless, viewers were left wondering just how deep Claire Newman’s (Hayley Erin) manipulation runs.

Throughout her time on the soap, Claire has been a character with a complex and shifting personality.

She’s gone from being Nikki Newman’s (Melody Thomas Scott) trusted assistant to a seemingly sweet and innocent woman in the clutches of her psychotic aunt, Jordan (Colleen Zenk).

But what if there’s more to Claire’s behavior than meets the eye? Could Claire be playing all sides, and is she really the mastermind behind the chaos surrounding the Newman family?

A History of Shifting Personas

Claire first entered the scene as Nikki’s capable and efficient assistant, the type of person every boss dreams of having. She was intelligent, driven, and loyal.

However, things took a dark turn when viewers discovered Claire’s true origins. Raised by the unstable Jordan, Claire was groomed to destroy the Newman family from the inside out. Her sinister upbringing led to a personality shift, transforming Claire from the sweet assistant into a dangerous schemer who was willing to go to extreme lengths to achieve her goals.

Yet, just when fans thought they had her pegged as the villain, Claire’s story took another unexpected twist. She was revealed to be a mentally confused patient in a hospital, vulnerable and seemingly incapable of causing harm. Then, she emerged as a shy and inexperienced young woman, who was swept off her feet by Kyle Abbott (Michael Mealor). Suddenly, Claire appeared to be the sweet, naïve girl who had never had friends or relationships, despite having attended college and business school. This constant fluctuation in Claire’s personality has made it difficult for viewers to know who the real Claire truly is.

Could Claire Be the Ultimate Manipulator?

But what if the real answer is none of the personalities Claire has shown so far? What if Claire isn’t sweet, innocent, or crazy? What if she’s simply playing a long game, manipulating everyone around her to get what she wants? After all, Claire’s most significant role may be that of a master manipulator. Perhaps, all along, she has been orchestrating the chaos in Genoa City from behind the scenes, and the varying personalities she adopts are simply part of her strategy to manipulate those around her.

Claire’s manipulative tendencies may have been learned directly from her aunt Jordan, a woman who has shown she’s willing to do anything to destroy the Newmans. Claire may have learned the art of deception and playing people like pawns in a game. Instead of being a victim of Jordan’s influence, Claire could be using Jordan’s actions to her own advantage. After all, what better way to advance one’s own agenda than by making everyone around you think you’re someone completely different than who you really are?

Claire’s Possible Role in Ian and Jordan’s Plan

Claire’s involvement with Ian Ward (Ray Wise) and Jordan raises even more suspicion. While Ian and Jordan claim their arrival in Genoa City was a coincidence—two strangers who just happened to meet and come up with a plan to get back at the Newmans—what if it wasn’t so random after all? What if Claire was the one who brought these two individuals together, subtly manipulating them into thinking they had their own idea for revenge?

With Claire’s goal being the complete destruction of the Newman family, it wouldn’t be out of the question for her to have played the long game, setting up Ian and Jordan as pawns in her larger plan. If the Newmans are eliminated, Claire could be the last one standing, with access to all of the Newman family’s wealth and power. By having Ian and Jordan cause chaos in Genoa City, Claire may be ensuring that her path to success is clear, without anyone left to challenge her.

Claire’s Ultimate Goal: Power and Control

As The Young and the Restless continues to unfold, it’s becoming increasingly clear that Claire’s motives may not be as simple as they seem. She’s been playing all sides—telling Nikki and Victoria (Amelia Heinle) that she wants to kill Jordan, while telling Jordan she wants to kill Victoria. So which part of this is true? The answer may be all of it and none of it. Claire could be using these conflicting statements as a way to further her agenda, keeping everyone guessing while she makes her next move.

Claire’s true goal may be power and control, and if that means manipulating Ian and Jordan, playing the sweet, naïve woman, or even pretending to be a mentally unstable patient, she’s willing to do whatever it takes. As the layers of Claire’s character continue to unfold, it’s clear that she is not to be underestimated. Her ability to play both sides and manipulate those around her makes her a dangerous force in Genoa City, and it’s likely that the best is yet to come.

The real question now is: How far is Claire willing to go to get what she wants? And when will her web of lies and manipulation finally unravel? Only time will tell, but it’s safe to say that Claire’s devious plans are just getting started, and Genoa City is in for a bumpy ride.
