For over four decades, Melody Thomas Scott has captivated audiences as Nikki Newman on The Young and the Restless.
While the soap opera has been a defining part of her career, one of her favorite aspects of being on the show is sharing the experience with her husband, Edward J. Scott.
The 68-year-old actress recently attended The Young and the Restless’ 13,000th episode celebration,
where she reflected on her husband’s return to the show as a senior producer.
In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Melody shared how Edward’s presence on set brings back cherished memories.
“It’s just like old times. For so many decades, he was here, and that’s how we met, so it’s like all home week. It really, it’s like business as usual,” she said.
A Love Story That Began on Set
Edward J. Scott first joined The Young and the Restless in 1976 as an associate producer, while Melody joined the cast three years later in 1979. Their professional collaboration soon blossomed into romance, and they married in 1985.
Edward worked his way up to become the show’s executive producer, holding the role until 2007. He later transitioned to The Bold and the Beautiful, where he served as a supervising producer for 14 years. His return to Y&R earlier this month marked a special homecoming, not just for the show but also for his wife.
Looking Back at Her Early Days on The Young and the Restless
Melody has been a cornerstone of the show for 45 years, but she admits she hasn’t kept track of exactly how many episodes she has appeared in. However, she still vividly remembers her early days on set—even if one of her first memories wasn’t what fans might expect.
“Well, this is not what you’re expecting to hear, but there is a boom operator that I found so cute,” she shared with a laugh. “And he never knew it. I never told him.”
Despite that amusing anecdote, her real love story was unfolding behind the scenes with Edward. Now, having him back at Y&R has added a new layer of joy to her workdays.
Working Together as Husband and Wife
Sharing a workplace with a spouse isn’t always easy, but for Melody and Edward, it has been a source of fun and laughter.
“It’s funny. We were making jokes about that yesterday. I told him I was going to call HR on him,” she joked to PEOPLE.
Their enduring relationship is a testament to their strong bond both on and off set. In June, the couple was honored with Lifetime Achievement Awards at the 51st Annual Daytime Emmy Awards, a recognition of their contributions to daytime television.
Finding Family Through The Young and the Restless
During her Emmy acceptance speech, Melody spoke about how The Young and the Restless has been more than just a job—it has given her a true sense of family.
“A lot of people have been talking about family tonight on this stage and growing up, this Hollywood kid was family challenged,” she said.
“When I was cast on Y&R 45 years ago, I walked onto stage 41 at TV City, and knew I was finally home with the family that had been waiting for me all along.”
For Melody, the soap opera has provided not only an incredible career but also lifelong friendships and a deep personal connection.
A Legacy That Continues
As The Young and the Restless continues its iconic run, Melody Thomas Scott remains one of its most beloved stars. Her dedication to the role of Nikki Newman, combined with her real-life love story with Edward J. Scott, adds a special layer of authenticity to her place in the show’s history.
With Edward back in the producer’s chair, the couple is once again sharing their passion for storytelling, proving that for them, The Young and the Restless is more than just a show—it’s home.
