General Hospital’s Sofia Mattsson Reflects on Sasha’s Tumultuous Journey

Sasha Gilmore has endured an extraordinary rollercoaster of emotions since arriving in Port Charles,
and her portrayer, Sofia Mattsson, recently took a nostalgic look back at her character’s dramatic storylines on General Hospital.
From deception to heartbreak, addiction to resilience, Sasha’s life has been a whirlwind, and Mattsson’s reflections highlight just how much her character has endured.

A Shaky Start in Port Charles

During a recent episode of Daily Drama, hosted by GH stars Steve Burton (Jason Morgan) and Bradford Anderson (Damian Spinelli),

Mattsson discussed the twists and turns of Sasha’s journey. When Anderson suggested it would be interesting to track Sasha’s life in Port Charles, Mattsson wasted no time pointing out how much her character has suffered.
“I started off as a bad girl,” Mattsson recalled, referring to Sasha’s introduction as a con artist. She was originally brought to town as part of a scheme to pretend she was Nina Reeves’ (Cynthia Watros) long-lost daughter. While the ruse was eventually exposed, Sasha managed to redeem herself, forming real connections with those around her—particularly Michael Corinthos (Chad Duell).
Sasha’s love life took a dramatic turn when she and Harrison Chase (Josh Swickard) teamed up in a misguided plan to push Michael and Willow (Katelyn MacMullen) together. While their intentions were noble, the fallout led Sasha to find an unexpected and deeply meaningful romance with Brando Corbin, played by the late Johnny Wactor.

Love, Loss, and Tragedy
Sasha and Brando’s love story became one of General Hospital’s most heartfelt relationships, but like many soap opera romances, tragedy struck. Mattsson fondly remembered working with Wactor, calling their on-screen romance “an epic love story.” However, their happiness was short-lived.
Sasha and Brando endured the devastating loss of their newborn son, Liam, an event that sent Sasha spiraling into grief. As she struggled to cope, her world was further shattered when Brando was tragically murdered. The double loss sent Sasha on a heartbreaking downward spiral, one that led her to a series of self-destructive choices.
A Struggle for Survival
As her life continued to unravel, Sasha faced manipulation at the hands of Gladys Corbin (Bonnie Burroughs), Brando’s mother, who took advantage of Sasha’s fragile mental state for financial gain. Sasha also found herself under the control of Cyrus Renault (Jeff Kober), whose influence led to her battle with drug addiction.
One of Sasha’s most memorable breakdowns occurred when she smashed the windshield of a paparazzo’s car, an intense scene that Mattsson admitted was “very fun” to film. The moment symbolized Sasha’s frustration, grief, and struggle to reclaim control of her life.

Despite these emotional challenges, Sasha has continued to fight for stability. However, her journey has not been without more setbacks, including a stint in a mental institution and an unexpected career change from Deception model to working at the Quartermaine estate.
An Uncertain Future
Reflecting on Sasha’s tumultuous journey, Mattsson acknowledged the hardships her character has faced. “I know you can’t be happy on a soap,” she joked. “And as soon as you’re happy, they have to ruin it, but they’ve really gone far with me.”
Indeed, Sasha’s storyline has been one of General Hospital’s most emotionally gripping arcs in recent years. Fans continue to root for her, hoping that, after so much pain, she may finally find peace and happiness. However, as longtime viewers know, in Port Charles, happiness is often fleeting.

With Sasha’s resilience and Mattsson’s compelling portrayal, one thing is certain—Sasha’s story is far from over. Whether redemption, romance, or more heartbreak lies ahead, General Hospital fans will be watching closely to see what comes next.
