Joe-Warren Plant, who has played Jacob Gallagher on Emmerdale for 15 years, has opened up about his character’s future following a heartbreaking storyline that left Jacob reeling.

After the tragic death of his mother, Leyla Harding, in the limo crash, Jacob’s life has taken a dramatic turn, and Joe-Warren is eager to explore new dynamics in the ITV soap.

A New Chapter for Jacob Gallagher

Since first stepping into the role in 2010, Joe-Warren has built strong on-screen relationships with Roxy Shahidi (Leyla Harding) and Matthew Wolfenden (David Metcalfe).

However, with both actors now having left the show, Jacob is facing a completely different reality in the village.

Speaking at a recent Emmerdale press event, Joe-Warren expressed excitement about what’s to come:

“There’s lots more coming up for Jacob, I can’t wait. The new episodes coming through have got me excited for the next year.”

Losing Leyla and David from his daily life has pushed Jacob into new territory, allowing him to interact with characters he hasn’t previously shared many scenes with. Joe-Warren sees this as an exciting challenge:

“Now Matthew and Roxy have gone, which was heartbreaking, it’s allowed me to work with other people who I don’t usually have scenes with, and it’s been a breath of fresh air really.”

He also revealed that Jacob’s role is evolving:

“It’s nice to see the different dynamics Jacob has with other characters as well. I feel like it’s pushing me in a different direction rather than playing the son of Leyla. It’s been nice for me to try and do something different.”

Staying in Touch with His On-Screen Family

Despite their exits from the soap, Joe-Warren remains close with his former co-stars. He shared that he still meets up with Roxy Shahidi and Matthew Wolfenden, revealing that they have plans for a reunion soon.

“We are due to go out for lunch very soon. I saw Matthew in panto and Roxy and I went down together. That was a really nice moment.”

This bond reflects the strong connections the actors built over the years, both on and off-screen.

A High-Pressure Storyline

Jacob recently took center stage in a gripping storyline that showcased his personal and professional struggles. His character, who is training to become a doctor, was put to the test in a special episode that explored the pressures of working in healthcare.

Joe-Warren admitted feeling the weight of responsibility when portraying Jacob’s emotional and professional journey.

“It was a lot of pressure, to be fair. I almost felt really scared in that moment. Obviously, it was exciting and exhilarating. I know a few people who have this job in real life, and it is not easy by any means.”

He went on to acknowledge the immense challenges faced by those in the medical profession.

“They struggle with the pressures that it brings on a scale that I don’t think any other job has.”

To prepare for the role, he took time to research real-life experiences, ensuring his portrayal was as authentic as possible.

“It was important to take my time with it and research things. You hear stories about what these people deal with on a day-to-day basis. I know that I couldn’t do it. I have so much respect for anybody who has that job. So, it was important for me to tell it with as much authenticity as I could.”

What’s Next for Jacob?

With Leyla and David no longer in the village, Jacob is entering a new phase of his life. His training as a doctor, coupled with his personal struggles, will shape his journey in unexpected ways. Fans can expect to see Jacob forging new relationships and facing fresh challenges as he navigates life without his parents’ guidance.

Joe-Warren’s enthusiasm for the upcoming storylines suggests that Jacob’s character development is far from over. As he continues to evolve, viewers will get to see a different side of him—one that is no longer defined solely by his relationship with Leyla and David.
