Sharon Case is among several The Young and the Restless stars celebrating a milestone anniversary in 2024, and she wouldn’t have it any other way.

“It’s good that it’s not just me (celebrating) 30 years. I’m glad there’s a bunch of other people, too,” she shared in a recent interview with TODAY.com.

Despite her impressive tenure on the show, Case remains remarkably humble.

This was evident in her reaction upon learning that Y&R was dedicating an entire episode to her character, Sharon Newman.

“I think this is the third time they’ve written a Sharon-centric episode.

I’m always so surprised because all these years I’ve worked here and I watch other people do it, but it’s never me. So I’m bashful when someone gives it to me. … I don’t expect that,” she admitted.

The special episode not only honors Case’s three decades on the soap but also revisits one of her most emotional storylines—mourning the loss of her daughter, Cassie Newman (Camryn Grimes).

Revisiting Sharon’s Most Heartbreaking Storyline

In recent episodes, Sharon has struggled with her bipolar disorder, going off her medication and experiencing hallucinations of Cassie, who tragically passed away as a teenager following a car accident.

For Case, this storyline is deeply personal, as Cassie’s death remains one of the most difficult moments of her Y&R career. Saying goodbye to her young co-star was also tough, as Grimes had become like family to her.

Cassie’s passing not only devastated Sharon but also reshaped her marriage to Nick Newman (Joshua Morrow), creating ripples that are still felt decades later.

“What we didn’t know then is that it would set the pace and set the journey of this show for decades to come,” Case reflected.

As fate would have it, revisiting this pivotal storyline coincides with her 30-year anniversary, making it all the more meaningful.

“We’ve consistently talked about Cassie since she’s been gone. … It’s still creating drama and storyline in their lives,” she said.

Although Grimes returned to Y&R years later as Cassie’s long-lost twin, Mariah Copeland, her bond with Case remains as strong as ever.

“We’re peers now. We’re friends now,” Case shared about her relationship with Grimes.

Shining a Light on Mental Health

Throughout her time on The Young and the Restless, Case has portrayed various mental health struggles, and she’s grateful for the opportunity to bring awareness to these important topics.

“The Young and the Restless has constantly done that as long as I’ve been here, and I love that that’s a part of the show,” she said.

Currently, Sharon’s mental health struggles have taken a darker turn, with hallucinations shifting from Cassie to Cameron Kirsten (Linden Ashby), a dangerous former lover she has killed—twice.

Despite the ominous nature of this storyline, Case enjoys the challenge, even joking about her character’s never-ending battle with Cameron.

“I love him as a character on the show. Dead or alive, it still works,” she quipped.

A Love Story That Stands the Test of Time

Though it has been years since Sharon and Nick were married, their connection remains unbreakable. While Sharon struggles with her mental health, Nick has been quietly looking out for her, a testament to their enduring bond.

Case and Morrow both joined Y&R around the same time, making their 30th anniversaries even more special. Fans have watched their characters fall in love as teenagers, raise a family, and navigate heartbreak—yet their connection remains strong.

“Together or not, they’ve been in each other’s lives for decades, and no one knows you better than that,” Case explained.

Even though they are no longer romantically involved, their shared history continues to shape their lives.

“When you see a couple that’s been that close their whole life, you think back later and go, ‘Why weren’t you just together and married?’ But that’s the journey,” she said. “These are the lessons that we like to learn, and I think that there’s always that hope that true love conquers all.”

Memorable Moments Over Three Decades

With 30 years under her belt, Case has played out countless memorable storylines, but a few stand out as favorites.

She fondly recalls an All That Jazz-themed episode when her character had cancer, as well as more action-packed storylines that required her to be physically active.

“I liked when Sharon broke out of prison and went on the run. … It’s a lot of action. You don’t always get to do a lot of physical work,” she said.

Case also admitted she had fun playing out her character’s first confrontation with Cameron, which included “driving him around in my trunk.” Other highlights include shooting her ex-husband Adam Newman (Mark Grossman) and embarking on an unexpected farm adventure with Sam Gibson (Sean Patrick Flanery).

Looking Ahead to the Future

Reflecting on her three-decade journey, Case acknowledges that she never imagined she’d be with Y&R for this long.

“I don’t think you consider things like 30 years of your future when you’re in your 20s,” she admitted.

Now that she’s reached this impressive milestone, the reality is surreal.

“I can’t believe it’s here. I can’t believe it’s me. There’s always someone else having a 30-year anniversary, not me,” she said.

As for the future, Case hopes to continue growing with the show for many years to come.

“I’ve made a very happy life for myself with this company and this family, and I really appreciate it. I’m very full of gratitude,” she said.

She also expressed her appreciation for the show’s loyal fans, who have remained devoted to Y&R through the years.

“I just want to tell them that I appreciate them and I am so grateful that they have stuck with this show. … I hope they’ll stick with us for another 40-50 years so I can get to my 40th or 50th anniversary,” she said.

With an iconic legacy already cemented, fans can only imagine what’s next for Sharon Case and her beloved character in the years to come.
