The shocking deaths of Andrew Searle, 65, and his wife Dawn, 56, have left their community in Les Pesquiès, France, devastated.

The couple, who had moved to France a decade ago from Musselburgh, East Lothian, to start a new life,
were found dead at their home earlier this month under mysterious and disturbing circumstances.
On February 6, their lifeless bodies were discovered by a concerned neighbor, who had grown worried after not seeing the couple out with their dogs.

What followed has since been a deeply unsettling investigation, as detectives begin to piece together what led to their tragic end.

The Discovery of Their Bodies

Dawn Searle was found outside the house in her pyjamas, with a head injury, and jewellery scattered around her body. Andrew Searle was found dead inside the house, hanging from a radiator, and the scene showed signs of a violent struggle. Initially, investigators speculated that Dawn had tried to flee from an attacker, only to be caught and brutally murdered. There were signs of a frantic search inside the home, with drawers and cupboards left open and furniture overturned, suggesting a potential robbery gone wrong.
However, after further investigation, detectives began to question the narrative of a burglary gone awry. While the house appeared to have been ransacked, there were no defensive wounds on either victim, and no forensic evidence suggesting the involvement of a third party. Furthermore, it seemed unlikely that such a violent act could have occurred without the neighbors hearing something, particularly as the house was surrounded by others in a peaceful village.
A ‘Staged Burglary’ and ‘Murder-Suicide’ Theory
The investigation has now taken a more chilling turn, with police suggesting that the deaths could be part of a “staged burglary gone wrong.” According to sources close to the inquiry, it is likely that Dawn was killed inside the house, with her body then moved to the garden to make it appear as though she had been murdered during a break-in. The police now believe that Andrew may have been responsible for her death before taking his own life in what is now being regarded as a probable “murder-suicide.”

Rodez prosecutor Nicolas Rigot-Muller, who is leading the investigation, has expressed his belief that the deaths could have been a result of a domestic crime followed by a suicide. He pointed out that if the couple had been attacked by a stranger, there would likely have been a chance for them to shout for help, which would have drawn attention to the situation. However, no such outcry was reported by neighbors, strengthening the theory that the crime was committed by someone close to the victims.
The Searles’ Happy Life in France
Andrew and Dawn Searle had relocated to the picturesque villa in Les Pesquiès to enjoy a quieter life. They had only married two years prior, in a ceremony officiated by the mayor of the village. Dawn, a mother of two, was walked down the aisle by her son, actor and country singer Callum Kerr, who starred in Hollyoaks and Virgin River. Their move to France seemed to be the start of a peaceful new chapter after Andrew’s lengthy career in the Serious Fraud Office, where he targeted financial crime rings, including those involved in money laundering.
Despite their recent move, the couple appeared to be happy in their new environment. Less than a day before their deaths, Andrew was seen shopping at a local newsagent in Villefranche-de-Rouergue. CCTV footage captured his last known moments as he bought a chocolate bar and some lottery tickets. There was no indication at the time that anything was amiss, making their deaths all the more shocking for those who knew them.

A Lingering Mystery
The police have yet to make any arrests in the case, and while the investigation has focused on the possibility of a domestic incident followed by suicide, they have not ruled out the possibility of a third party being involved. With the house and garden still being treated as a crime scene, investigators continue to look for any further evidence that could shed light on the events leading up to the tragic deaths of Andrew and Dawn Searle.
The couple’s deaths have left the small village of Les Pesquiès in shock, as friends and family struggle to comprehend the brutal circumstances surrounding their deaths. As the investigation unfolds, the community continues to mourn the loss of two beloved individuals, and authorities remain committed to uncovering the truth behind this chilling crime.
