Tom King’s unexpected return to Emmerdale has reignited tensions, particularly for

Belle Dingle, as his controlling behavior continues to cast a shadow over her life.

Played by James Chase, Tom had been absent from the soap for several months

following his imprisonment for coercive control, emotional abuse, and physical

violence against Belle. However, in a shocking twist, he made his comeback just as

Belle was preparing to finalize her divorce from him. Despite her determination to sever all ties, Tom remained adamant about trying to salvage their toxic relationship.

Belle visited him in prison, hoping to put the past behind her for good. But for Tom, her visit was an opportunity to manipulate her once again. He interpreted it as a sign that she still cared, twisting the situation to suit his narrative. “So what about you? Wedding planning again?” he asked, before adding, “I didn’t tell you about the prison chaplain. He’s a great guy; you’d love him. And even I might be finding God.” His words were carefully chosen, presenting himself as a reformed man, but Belle wasn’t fooled.

His manipulation continued as he tried to convince her that their relationship was worth saving. “You must have thought it was a possibility or you wouldn’t be here. Surely you’re here for the right reason,” he suggested, hoping to plant doubt in her mind. But Belle remained resolute. When Tom implied that there was still something to “achieve” together, she made her stance crystal clear: “We can achieve a divorce together.”

While Tom outwardly accepted her decision, his history suggests he won’t let go so easily. Viewers are left wondering whether his return is temporary or if he’s plotting something more sinister. Given his past behavior, it wouldn’t be surprising if he found a way to insert himself back into Belle’s life against her wishes. Could he be setting the stage for another cycle of manipulation and abuse?

James Chase, who portrays Tom, had previously spoken about his departure from the show, acknowledging the impact of his character’s villainous arc. “Obviously, all good things have to come to an end,” he said, reflecting on his exit. “It’s sad to walk away from so many nice people on Emmerdale. I have made so many great friends and I am going to miss them all a lot. After we finished on my last day, I did choke up.”

He also shared how the cast and crew made his departure memorable, with a heartfelt farewell. “Everyone had gathered to say goodbye and they asked me to make a speech. I found myself starting to choke up because you suddenly realize it really is coming to an end,” he admitted. Co-star Jim Hooton, who plays Sam Dingle, had high praise for his performance, telling him he had portrayed an “iconic villain” and should be proud.

The lingering question remains: is Tom truly gone for good, or is this just the beginning of another dark chapter for Belle? His sudden reappearance suggests unfinished business, and if past behavior is anything to go by, he won’t let her move on without a fight. Fans will have to stay tuned to see whether Belle can finally break free or if Tom’s influence will continue to haunt her.
