EastEnders’ 40th anniversary live episode delivered plenty of drama, but one moment, in particular, left fans both amused and bewildered.

A scene involving Sonia Fowler (Natalie Cassidy), Bianca Jackson (Patsy Palmer), and Lauren Branning (Jacqueline Jossa) took an unexpected turn,

leading viewers to question a seemingly odd reaction from Jossa’s character. Now, the actress has spoken out to set the record straight.

The dramatic episode saw Sonia giving birth in the aftermath of the Queen Vic explosion, with Bianca and Lauren stepping in to assist her.

During the scene, Bianca removed Sonia’s underwear and tossed them towards Lauren. What followed sparked a frenzy on social media,

as viewers were convinced that Lauren appeared to sniff the undergarment before setting it aside.

A TikTok video highlighting the unusual moment quickly gained traction, amassing over 20,000 likes and 14,000 shares. Fans flooded the comment section with speculation, questioning whether Jossa had genuinely taken a whiff of the clothing or if it was simply an awkward camera angle. Eventually, the actress stepped in to clarify what had really happened.

Taking to the comments of the viral video, Jossa dismissed the sniffing theory outright. “Just to clarify, I didn’t sniff them,” she explained. “I was checking what they were and lifting them in shot. No sniffing.”

She further elaborated that in previous rehearsals of the scene, the knickers had typically hit her in the face, so she instinctively adjusted her reaction to ensure they remained visible to viewers. “Usually, they hit me in the face,” she added. “So I wanted to make sure they were visible.”

While the incident may have been an unexpected highlight for fans, it wasn’t the only on-air mishap during the live episode. James Bye, who plays Martin Fowler, recently admitted to making a mistake on set. Though he didn’t specify the exact nature of his slip-up, he hinted that Lacey Turner (who plays Stacey Slater) had helped cover for him. Bye teased that Turner might eventually reveal what went wrong, adding an air of mystery to the behind-the-scenes chaos.

Despite minor hiccups, EastEnders’ anniversary special was widely praised for its ambitious storytelling and commitment to live television. The high-stakes drama and unexpected twists kept viewers on the edge of their seats, reinforcing why the soap remains a staple of British television.

Jossa’s clarification regarding the now-infamous moment has put to rest any lingering questions, proving that sometimes, things on live TV aren’t always as they seem. As for future episodes, fans can expect even more drama as the aftermath of the Queen Vic explosion continues to unfold.
