Coronation Street star Claire Sweeney has opened up about her character Cassie Plummer’s shocking downfall,
admitting she feels a sense of ‘relief’ now that the truth has finally come to light.
Fans of the long-running ITV soap witnessed dramatic scenes as Ken Barlow, played by William Roache, finally uncovered Cassie’s disturbing actions.
Cassie’s storyline took a dark turn after she managed to secure a place in Ken’s life as his carer following his fall and subsequent injury.
However, as time went on, her intentions took a sinister twist when she resorted to drugging him in an attempt to ensure he remained dependent on her.
Cassie’s manipulation began when Ken decided he no longer needed her care, prompting her to spike his drinks in an effort to keep her place in his home.
This disturbing plot escalated when Ken was rushed to the hospital, but Cassie managed to avoid suspicion when Tracy Barlow was wrongly blamed for mixing up Ken’s medication. Realizing the risk of being caught, Cassie switched to using antihistamines to make Ken drowsy and continued to exploit him financially by making costly purchases using his credit card.
However, her devious actions did not remain hidden for long. Ken, despite his deteriorating health, pieced together the truth and exposed Cassie after suffering a heart attack. As he regained consciousness following an emergency operation, he bravely revealed to his family that Cassie had been drugging him, leading to her arrest.
Reflecting on the dramatic turn of events, Claire Sweeney expressed her relief that the storyline had reached its climax. Speaking about her character’s exposure, she acknowledged that Cassie’s actions could not continue indefinitely. “I think there was a sense of relief because she couldn’t have just carried on the way she was,” Claire admitted. “For Cassie, it was always going to come to a head, and there has to be a bit of a redemption arc for the character.”
She went on to praise her co-star William Roache for his powerful performance in the emotional scenes that saw Ken confront Cassie. “Bill Roache in the scenes we’re going to see is an award-winning performance. He literally made me cry, he was so wonderful!” she revealed. Claire described how the cast and crew were left in awe of his acting, with one particular scene earning a spontaneous round of applause from those on set.
Despite Cassie’s manipulative behavior, Claire insists that her character’s intentions weren’t entirely malicious. “I do think she genuinely cares for Ken. He sees her, he teaches her things, they’ve shared experiences together. She genuinely adores him,” she explained. Cassie’s attachment to Ken was deeply rooted in her troubled past, where she endured hardships and neglect, leaving her desperate for stability.
However, Claire admitted that Cassie’s fear of losing her new life led her to make terrible decisions. “Her keeping him a bit sleepy so that he still needed her—it was survival mode for her,” she said. Cassie’s history of abuse and struggles with addiction played a major role in shaping her desperate attempts to cling to the security Ken’s household provided.
Beyond her bond with Ken, Cassie had also developed strong connections with other residents on the cobbles. Her romance with Steve McDonald was something Claire described as genuine, adding that Cassie’s interactions with Tracy Barlow brought a sense of fun and rivalry to the soap. “She spars with Tracy, which keeps her going. There’s a real banter between them,” she noted.
Although Cassie’s future on the street is now uncertain following her arrest, Claire remains hopeful that her character will find redemption. “There has to be a redemption arc with her. There’s got to be vulnerabilities; there’s got to be some sort of comeuppance for everything she’s done because otherwise, it’s just a bit black and white,” she explained.
In a lighthearted moment, Claire also shared her personal enjoyment of Cassie’s transformation during her time with Ken. “She got the nails, which Claire, the actress, loved—that Cassie was suddenly able to have a French manicure, a bob haircut, and a bit of mascara,” she joked. “I was like, ‘Yes! Keep the antihistamines going!’”
