BBC and ITV Schedule Shake-Up Leads to Coronation Street, Emmerdale and EastEnders Hiatus

As the excitement builds around various sporting events, British audiences must brace for significant changes in the broadcast schedule of their favorite soap operas. The BBC and ITV’s sports coverage, particularly events like Wimbledon and the UEFA Women’s Euros, has led to a temporary reshuffling of the programming for beloved series such as Coronation Street, Emmerdale, and EastEnders.

Impacted Soap Operas

The changes will primarily affect three long-standing soap operas that have cultivated a fervent fan base over the years:

  • EastEnders
  • Coronation Street
  • Emmerdale

Due to the dominance of sporting events on both BBC and ITV networks, fans may encounter disruptions to the airing schedules, which could significantly affect weekly TV traditions for many households.

Specific Schedule Adjustments

The following adjustments have been announced for this week’s programming:

  • Monday, July 7:
    • Due to the Wimbledon tournament, there will be no episode of EastEnders, which would usually air at 8 PM, as it clashes with the tennis coverage.
    • Both Coronation Street and Emmerdale will also be cancelled due to the live Portugal vs. Italy football match kicking off at 8 PM, following pre-match coverage starting at 7:15 PM.
  • Tuesday, July 8:
    • Emmerdale will proceed with its regular airing at 7:30 PM for 30 minutes, while EastEnders will not air again on this day.
  • Wednesday, July 9:
    • Fans of EastEnders can delight in two episodes back-to-back from 8 PM to 9 PM.
    • Coronation Street and Emmerdale will unfortunately face cancellation as a critical football match takes precedence at 7 PM.
  • Thursday, July 10:
    • EastEnders is scheduled to air from 7 PM to 7:30 PM this day.
    • Following EastEnders, Emmerdale will have a lengthened episode from 7:30 PM to 8:30 PM.
    • Coronation Street fans will have to wait until later, as it will be broadcast from 9 PM to 10 PM.
  • Friday, July 11:
    • The schedule returns to near-normality as Emmerdale will air at 7:30 PM, followed by Coronation Street at 8 PM and EastEnders at its regular time of 7 PM.

Additional Programming Shifts

In addition to the soap operas, there will also be changes in other popular shows. For example, the quiz show The Chase will not air during its normal timeslot on Monday, July 7, due to the football match. Instead, a celebrity special episode will take center stage on the previous Sunday, July 6.

These extensive schedule alterations are essential for accommodating the high-profile sporting events, which draw significant viewership on both networks. Fans of these soaps should prepare for the upcoming changes and adjust their viewing habits accordingly. The disruption may take some time to settle down, as there could be further adjustments in response to the ongoing sports events.
