After captivating audiences in EastEnders and Sex Education, Mimi Keene has taken on an exciting new role in the BBC’s latest Agatha Christie adaptation, Towards Zero.
However, despite her growing success, the 26-year-old actress admits she was filled with nerves when meeting Hollywood legend Anjelica Huston for the first time.
From Walford to Murder Mystery
Mimi first rose to prominence playing Cindy Williams Jr. in EastEnders between 2013 and 2015 before gaining further recognition in Netflix’s hit series Sex Education.
Now, she is stepping into the world of classic murder mysteries, portraying Kay Strange in the new adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Towards Zero.
Kay is the newlywed wife of tennis star Nevile Strange, played by Oliver Jackson-Cohen.
Their marriage, however, is complicated by the presence of Nevile’s ex-wife, Audrey, played by Ella Lily Hyland.
The story follows the couple as they visit Nevile’s wealthy aunt, Lady Camilla Tressilian, played by Anjelica Huston, at her coastal estate. Tensions rise, old emotions resurface, and soon, a shocking murder takes place—turning the peaceful setting into the heart of a gripping whodunit.
Meeting a Hollywood Icon
For Mimi, the opportunity to work alongside Anjelica Huston was both thrilling and nerve-wracking. The award-winning actress, known for her legendary roles in The Addams Family and Prizzi’s Honor, takes on the role of the formidable Lady Tressilian—an integral figure in the story’s unfolding drama.
Reflecting on their first meeting, Mimi admitted she felt anxious but was quickly put at ease. “I was a bit nervous, but as soon as we got started, she made me feel so relaxed,” she shared. “I was watching her and thinking, ‘She’s so good.’ It really helped me settle into my role.”
It wasn’t just on set that Anjelica made an impression—off-screen, she was just as warm and welcoming. She even treated her co-stars, including Mimi, Oliver, and Ella, to lunch, making the filming experience all the more enjoyable.
Oliver Jackson-Cohen also spoke highly of the legendary actress, saying, “There’s a reason why some people are icons. The work she’s done over the years is impeccable. She came in unbelievably prepared, gracious, and kind.”
Anjelica Huston’s Unique Role
For Anjelica, Towards Zero marks her British TV debut, and she couldn’t be happier—especially because many of her scenes were filmed in bed! “Bed is one of my favorite places to be, so I was immediately happy with that,” she joked. “It’s not often you get called onto a project where you spend most of your time in bed—usually, it’s the other way around!”
Dressed in a nightgown and dressing gown for much of the show, Anjelica’s character exudes power and authority despite her limited mobility. Her role as Lady Tressilian serves as the anchor of the unfolding drama, making her presence felt even when she isn’t at the center of the action.
A Story of Love, Betrayal, and Murder
Towards Zero delves deep into complex relationships, jealousy, and simmering tensions. At its heart is the tangled dynamic between Nevile Strange, his new wife Kay, and his ex-wife Audrey. Their past and present collide at Gull’s Point, the family estate where emotions run high and old wounds resurface.
Oliver Jackson-Cohen and Ella Lily Hyland, who play Nevile and Audrey, found inspiration in the tumultuous romance of Hollywood icons Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. “They just kept coming back to each other,” Oliver noted. “There was so much love there, but it raises the question—was it even love?”
Ella further explained Audrey’s emotional struggle. “Audrey moved to Gull’s Point when she was a child because she was an orphan. She and Nevile were together from a really early age—it was almost like a sibling relationship that later turned romantic.”
Kay’s presence at Gull’s Point makes things even more uncomfortable for Audrey, who is forced to watch her ex-husband move on with another woman in the home where she grew up. But what starts as an awkward reunion soon takes a deadly turn when Lady Tressilian is found murdered in her bed.
A Classic Whodunit with Modern Appeal
With its gripping storyline, dynamic performances, and a stellar cast, Towards Zero is set to captivate audiences. The series brings Christie’s mystery to life with stunning cinematography, tense storytelling, and powerful performances from its leads.
Matthew Rhys joins the ensemble as Inspector Leach, the detective tasked with unraveling the truth behind Lady Tressilian’s murder. As suspicions rise and secrets come to light, the characters find themselves trapped in a web of deception, making for an unforgettable mystery.
The three-part series premieres on Sunday, March 2, at 9pm on BBC One, promising viewers an enthralling adaptation filled with suspense, drama, and unexpected twists.
