Emmerdale’s notorious bad boy, Cain Dingle, has been a central character on the ITV soap for 25 years, with actor Jeff Hordley bringing him to life.

While Cain is known for his tumultuous love life, including a past romance with cousin Charity Dingle and his rocky marriage to Moira Dingle,
Jeff’s real-life romance is far more stable and heartwarming.
Off-screen, Jeff Hordley has been happily married to his Emmerdale co-star Zoe Henry, who portrays Rhona Goskirk.

Their love story began long before they found fame on television.

The couple first met in 1994 at the Manchester Metropolitan University School of Theatre, where they became college sweethearts.

Zoe reminisced about their early years together during an interview on Lorraine, recalling, “We got together at drama school. We’ve been together 28 years. With the connection on set, we were together for 10 years before that as well. We got together in 1994, I believe.”
Jeff also reflected on their love story, telling Soaplife magazine in 2011: “We met at drama school in 1994. I saw Zoe and realised she was the girl for me.” He fondly remembered making his move, saying, “I made moves and, fortunately, she said yes on that occasion too.”
Their engagement came in a truly memorable fashion. In 2002, Zoe won the Best Actress in a Leading Role award at the Manchester Evening News Theatre Awards. Jeff had been planning to propose for some time and saw this as the perfect moment. Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, he shared, “I had been planning to propose for some time and thought to myself: ‘If she wins today, I’ll do it today.’ When she won, I leaped out of my seat in front of her. Then it dawned on me that her winning meant that I had to propose – and that’s when the nerves set in. Fortunately for me, she said yes.”
The couple tied the knot a year later in a private ceremony at Hedingham Castle, followed by a reception at the Swan Hotel in Lavenham. Jeff was adamant about keeping their wedding away from the media spotlight, saying, “OK and Hello magazines won’t be there, no way. I like to keep my private life to myself. I just wouldn’t do that. I wouldn’t want to bring that kind of intrusive pressure on myself or on my family and my friends.”
Several of their Emmerdale co-stars attended the wedding, including Emma Atkins (Charity Dingle) and Charley Webb (Debbie Dingle).

Jeff and Zoe went on to build a beautiful life together, welcoming their daughter, Violet, and son, Stan, in the years that followed. Their family resides in the picturesque Yorkshire Dales, where they enjoy a peaceful life with their two dogs.
Zoe often shares glimpses of their home life on social media, showcasing their love for gardening and homegrown produce. She previously revealed to Fabulous Magazine that their allotment is a vital part of their lifestyle. “We have an allotment, and it’s so therapeutic to have your hands in the earth,” she said. “We’re mindful of what we eat, but watching our diet isn’t about being on TV, it’s more about general well-being, as Jeff has Crohn’s disease.”
Despite their fame, Jeff and Zoe remain grounded, prioritizing family and health above all else. Their enduring love story is proof that even in the dramatic world of Emmerdale, true romance can thrive away from the cameras.
