After more than a decade in the role, actress Nikki Sanderson has officially announced her departure from Hollyoaks, marking the end of an era for her character, Maxine Minniver.

The decision to leave was not an easy one, but with the support of her loved ones and a period of self-reflection, Nikki felt the time was right to embark on a new chapter in her life.

Nikki, who has been a staple on the Channel 4 soap since 2012, admits that leaving Hollyoaks was an incredibly difficult choice.

The role of Maxine became a significant part of her life, and walking away from such a long-standing character was something she grappled with for quite some time.

However, after turning 40 and embracing the next phase of her journey, she realized that the opportunity to explore new possibilities was one she couldn’t ignore.

“I’ve loved playing Maxine; she’s been such a huge part of my life,” Nikki shared. “It wasn’t a decision I made overnight.

I really struggled with it, but I’m lucky to have such a great support system around me. Now, I have to embrace the unknown and see what’s next.”

Despite not having her next role lined up, Nikki is optimistic about the future. The idea of stepping into new projects excites her, though she acknowledges that navigating the industry outside the familiarity of Hollyoaks will be a new challenge. However, she has no regrets about her choice and is ready to see what opportunities arise.

Her boyfriend, actor Anthony Quinlan, has been a pillar of support throughout her decision-making process. Having previously starred in Hollyoaks as Gilly Roach, he understands the difficulties that come with leaving a long-term soap role. Nikki credits him for helping her gain the confidence to take this step, saying, “Anthony has been incredible. He knows exactly how it feels to be at a crossroads in your career, and he’s really supported me through it all.”

As she prepares to exit the show, Nikki looks back on the impactful storylines she has tackled over the years. From domestic abuse to mental health struggles, Maxine’s journey has been filled with emotional and powerful moments. Nikki is proud of the awareness these storylines have brought to important issues and is grateful for the opportunity to have portrayed such a complex character.

Her role in the 2022 special episode, The Long Walk Home, which addressed violence against women, remains one of her most significant projects. “It was an important story to tell, and I’m proud to have been a part of it,” she said.

Now, with her time on Hollyoaks coming to an end, Nikki is looking forward to taking a break, recharging, and exploring new avenues. She plans to enjoy some well-earned relaxation, embrace spontaneity, and focus on her well-being.

As for what’s next, she remains open-minded and even hinted at a possible return to Coronation Street, where she previously played Candice Stowe from 1999 to 2005. “Never say never,” she teased. “I love Coronation Street, and if the opportunity ever came up, I’d definitely consider it.”

With a career spanning over two decades, Nikki Sanderson is no stranger to the highs and lows of the entertainment industry. While stepping away from Hollyoaks is a bittersweet moment, she is embracing the future with optimism and excitement. Whether she returns to the cobbles, lands a new acting role, or explores other creative ventures, one thing is certain—this is just the beginning of a new and exciting chapter for her.
