General Hospital (GH) spoilers reveal that the show offered a refreshing change by having Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) and Nina Reeves (Cynthia Watros) find a path to peace. Sonny has been acting like a belligerent nightmare for months, so it was nice to see him have a calm, respectful conversation with Nina and acknowledge his own mistakes.
It feels like the writers are genuinely trying to get the show back on track, so that’s certainly a good thing.
However, we want to take a closer look at Nina and Sonny’s scenes in the July 17 episode so we can determine what the goal of them really was.
Of course, Sonny’s main objective in coming to Nina’s office was to seek her support in the custody feud, but he also wanted to bury the hatchet.
That led to Nina taking the blame for everything that went wrong between them, but Sonny knew he wasn’t completely innocent.
After Nina praised Sonny as a father, she pledged her support and revealed how she’d blindside Ava Jerome (Maura West) if she came to her for help.
Sonny asked if Nina was trying to make him fall in love with her again, so she asked if once wasn’t enough.
Nina and Sonny’s scenes brought back a familiar flirty connection, but we still weren’t getting romantic reboot vibes.
Instead, Sonny and Nina’s discussion felt more like long overdue closure.
We saw Nina admit that their relationship was based on what happened with “Mike,” who wasn’t truly real.
Nina also talked to Maxie Jones (Kirsten Storms) later about how she tried to change herself for Sonny and how she ultimately didn’t fit into Sonny’s life.
Since Nina reflected on losing herself when she was with Sonny, it doesn’t seem like the show’s planning on pushing them back together.
Part of Nina will always love Sonny, but she now realizes the naysayers were right about them being doomed from the start.
Did GH just close the door on Sonny and Nina’s romance forever?
You can never say never on a soap since so many romantic pairings come back around sooner or later, but those scenes certainly felt like a final farewell to the couple.
On the bright side, there’s the potential for Sonny and Nina to remain friends now that they’ve wished each other happiness.
Sonny will need all the support he can get as he spins out in the coming weeks, so we’ll bring you more predictions on what’s ahead for him.
